Roman Empire, covering present-day Friesland and later also parts
                             of
present-day Groningen.
10 Apr 1101                Last count of Friesland dies and the Counts of Holland and the
Bishops of Utrecht fight to establish their authority over the
                             region.
Nov 1165                   Treaty of Utrecht, the Holy Roman Emperor proclaims Friesland a

of Friesland by the Frisians. Although both Holland and Utrecht
continue their attempts to obtain the submission of the region,
Friesland is generally considered free from this year. The three
subdivisions (Oostergo, Westergo and Zevenwouden) were now ruled

23 Sep 1493                Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I
confirms the Freedom of the Friesian
                             lands under his direct overlordship.
30 Apr 1498                To protect themselves against a band of foreign invaders, the
Frisians recognize the Saxon Duke as Lord of Friesland,
ending Frisian Freedom under direct authority of the Emperor.
1514
In alliance with opponents to Saxon rule Gelre starts the conquest
                             of Friesland
19 May 1515                Unable to stop the advance of Gelre, the Saxon Lord sells his rights

Dec 1524                   The Habsburg Duke is recognized as Lord of Friesland by all Frisians

¹Despite the fact that the style of Commissaris van de Koning/Koningin (Commissioners of the King/Queen) was formally also introduced in Limburg in 1850, the ancient style of Governor continued - and still continues to be very commonly used, even in official documents, partly
as a consequence of the special position of Limburg in 1839-1867 and partly also as a Limburgian particularism.
