Note:
The names of the voivodships are given in adjectival form,
usually preceded by województwo
(e.g., województwo
dolnośląskie). The Polish title of a
governor is wojewoda (plural wojewodowie).
On 18 Jul 1998, the Sejm, approved legislation reducing
Poland's then 49 provinces to 16 new ones. On 27 Jul 1998,
President Aleksander Kwaśniewski signed the bill into law
which divided Poland into 16 provinces, effective 1 Jan
1999.
