Ross Ice Shelf and Victoria Land claimed
for Britain.
23 Jul 1923
Antarctica between 160°E and 150°W longitudes
and south of 60° annexed by Britain and named
Ross Dependency.
30 Jul 1923 Ross Dependency is transferred to New Zealand.
20 Jan 1957 Scott Base base in Antarctica opens, from
5 Mar 1958 under New Zealand (a permanent
base since 1962).
4 May 1959 New Zealand Antarctic Division established.
1 Jul 1996 New Zealand Antarctic Institute, later renamed
