c.1797                     One of the chiefs in Imerina manages to reunite his
                             native region (Imerina).
23 Oct 1817                King Radama I of Imerina, having conquered large parts
                             of island, enters into a treaty of friendship and peace
                             with the U.K. in
which he is recognized as king of Madagascar.

 1 Oct 1895                Queen accepts French protectorate.
27 Sep 1896                Madagascar and Dependencies a French colony (by
                             law of 6 Aug 1896).
28 Jan 1897                Royalty is abolished in Imerina by France.

Antongil

[Benyovszky's Antongil flag
                (Madagascar)]

Mar 1773                   "Benyovszky Volunteers", to set up a French colony on Madagascar
                             establishing a trading-post at Antongil on the east coast. He is
                             eventually proclaimed to be the supreme chief and king
                             (Ampansacabe) by a group of locals.

Dec 1776                   Benyovszky departs.
Jun 1779                   Trading post dismantled by order of the French government.
Jun 1785                   Benyovszky returns to Madagascar back by American, Austrian, and
                             British merchants.
24 May 1786                Terminated by France.
