Regions of Greece Note: From 1 Jan 2011, the administrative system of Greece was drastically overhauled. The former system of 13 peripheries, 54 prefectures was replaced by 7 decentralized administrations, 13 peripheries or regions. The first elections were held on 7 Nov 2010 and 14 Nov 2010. The Autonomous Monastic State of Athos, as an autonomous self-governing entity, was exempt from these reforms.
