Sri Lanka Provinces from 1988

Provinces:  Central - Eastern - North Central - North Western - Northern - Sabaragamuwa - Southern - Uva - Western - Former Province:  North Eastern -

Note: On 14 Nov 1987, the 13th amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution passed, authorizing the establishment of Provincial Councils to govern the nine provinces which had previously not had any decentralized administrative authority.  But in 2017, the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act No. 17 (of 20 Sep 2017) had the effect of postponing Provincial Council elections as the companion delimitation of constituencies report was rejected by Parliament in 2018. The powers of the Provincial Councils whose terms expired in the meantime will be exercised by the President and/or Parliament under Article 154L and 154M of the Constitution.
