Traditional States of Nigeria
Note: This record is not complete, but
contains the most important states. The phrase "Fulbe
jihad" refers to the state-founding jihad led by `Usuman
dan Fodio in the first decade of the 19th century.
Population data is currently available for most of the
largest states in the Northern Region.
Under the British "indirect" rule the states were
recognized by the British as the Native Authorities with
legal authority of local administration (from 1911, in the
Northern Nigeria; from 1914, in the Western Region of
Southern Nigeria; and from 1916, in the Eastern Region of
Southern Nigeria) and taxation (from 1917). In many cases
the status of Native Authority was exercised by councils
of federated rulers (especially in the Eastern Region of
Southern Nigeria). Native Authorities in the Northern
Nigeria were officially abolished only in 1976. As of
1953, there were 220 Native Authorities in present Nigeria
and about half of them were councils.
As of 1959, there were the following Native
Authorities in the Northern Region that were councils and
are not currently recorded below: Akwanga Federation (pop.
98,000); Gwari Federation with Kamuku council and Wushishi
chiefdom (pop. 142,000); Kabba chiefdoms (pop. 110,000);
Kwara Federation (pop. 33,000); Lowland (Shendam)
Federation (pop. 160,000); Numan Federation (pop.
121,000); Pankshin Federation with Kanam chiefdom (pop.
279,000); and Tangale-Waja Federation (pop. 99,000).
