Note
: Just before independence Kenya was divided into 7 Regions with devolved governments (the Nairobi Area remained under the central government). Amendments to constitution in Jan 1965 ended the regional autonomy and in 1966 the Regional Assemblies were abolished. In 2013, self-government was granted to 47 Counties of Kenya.

Party abbreviations: KADU = Kenya African Democratic Union (federalist, KANU opposition, 1960-1964, merged into KANU); KANU = Kenya African National Union (conservative, Kenyan nationalist, formerly democratic socialist, sole party from 1969, only legal party Jun 1982-Dec 1991, named Kenya African Union 1942-1960, est.14 May 1960); NFDP = Northern Frontier Democratic Party (Somali regionalist, 1961-196.)
