Note: From 1 Jan 2011, in accordance with the "Kallikrátis Program" on the new architecture of local government and decentralized management, the administrative system of Greece was devolved. The former system of 13 regions established in 1987, 50 nomós (prefectures), 19 eparcheía (provinces), 910 municipalities (dímoi) and 124 communities (koinótites) was replaced by 13 self-governing regions called periféreies (peripheries [or regions]), 325 dímous (municipalities), and 7 apokentroméni dioíkisi (decentralized administrations). The first elections for regional (periféreia) governors were held on 7 and 14 Nov 2010. The Holy Mountain (see Mount Athos under Greece), as an autonomous self-governing entity, was exempt from these reforms. The regional governors' title is perifereiárchis. Greek names are listed using a modified Hellenic Organization for Standardization (ELOT) 743 romanization system.
