Botswana Traditional states

States: baKgatla - baKwêna - baMalete - baNgwato - baNgwaketse - baRôlông - baTawana - baTlôkwa -

Note
:
This record refers to the "eight principal tribes"; all except the baMalete are ethnic baTswana, and their ruling lines are genealogically related. Other baTswana tribes and segments of tribes are recorded under South African traditional states. Forms of names in (parentheses) are "Europeanized" forms used in extra-tribal contexts. Under the British "indirect" rule the states were recognized by the British as the Native Authorities with legal authority of local administration and taxation.
