c.1505/15                  Discovered by Spanish Capt. Juan de Bermúdez (d.
                             1570), it is later named La Bermuda after him
                             (sometimes written Barmuda).
Jun 1527                   King Charles V of Spain authorized the colonization
                             of Bermuda (without effect).
1556                       French
privateer Capt. Mesmin leaves the crew of a
                             Spanish prize ship wrecked on the Bermuda reefs.
c.1560                     French Capt. Roussel (Russel) is wrecked on the
                             Bermuda reefs.
11 Jan 1584                Spanish ship Santa Lucia under Capt. Juan López is
                             wrecked off Bermuda.
17 Dec 1593 - 11 May 1594  French Capt. La Barbotière is wrecked on Bermuda,
                             Henry May becomes the first Englishman to land.
Dec 1603                   Spanish Capt. Diego Ramírez and crew spend 3 weeks
                             on Bermuda.
30 Jul 1609 - 11 May 1610  Virginia Company ship Sea Venture, under
Sir George
                             Somers,
is wrecked on the Bermuda reefs. They
                             depart on 11 May 1610 only leaving 3 behind.
