25 Aug 1791                The bay was named "Jervis Bay" by Lt. Richard Bowen (b. 1761 -
                             d. 1797), aboard the convict transport ship the Atlantic, for
                             Admiral Sir John Jervis.
12 Jul 1915                Jervis Bay, south of Sydney, transferred from the state of
                             New South Wales to the Commonwealth to be a part of the
                             Capital Territory.
May 1975                   First resident regional director appointed.
11 May 1989                Australian Capital Territory is granted self-government; but
                             the Jervis Bay Territory remains under Commonwealth control,
                             and remains subject to (applicable) ACT laws.
 4 Mar 1992                Jervis Bay National Park (former Jervis Bay Nature Reserve formed
                             in 1971; renamed Booderee National Park in 1997) created.

                             and other islands in the Torres Strait within 60 miles of the
