¹elected king (Suomen kuningas) 10 Oct 1918, Friedrich Karl Ludwig Konstantin, Prinz und Landgraf zu Hessen (s.a.), did not arrive, and declined the throne 8 Dec 1918, the refusal became definitive on 29 Dec 1918. In the Finnish election document the prince is called Fredrik Kaarle, but according to conventional wisdom his name as king would have been Väinö I of Finland.

Noble titles: Greve = Count, Friherre = Baron, Jarl = Earl.

Territorial Disputes: Various groups in Finland advocate restoration of Karelia and other areas ceded to the Soviet Union, but the Finnish government asserts no territorial demands. Finland leases the Saimaa Canal and the island of Malyj Vysotskij (Ravansaari) from Russia since 1963. Russian legislation is in force, with few exceptions concerning maritime rules and the employment of canal staff, which fall under Finnish jurisdiction, negotiations to extend the lease time beyond 2013 are presently underway between Finland and Russia.
