Note: Following a constitutional change
(27 Feb 1855) the provinces of New Granada (as Colombia was called until
1861) gained the right to organize themselves as sovereign states, while
remaining part of New Granada. With the creation of the Republic of Colombia
(5 Aug 1886) the states were transformed into departments under the central
government.
